In 2001, Stephan Templ and Tina Walzer published in German a book entitled Our Vienna, which offered, for the first time, an inventory of businesses and landmarks and other property stolen from Viennese Jews after the Anschluss with Germany in 1938. After filing a claim for his mother, Templ was sentenced to jail on charges that have been described as "Kafkaesque", prompting 75 Holocaust scholars to request that the President of Austria intervene. In attacking Templ, Austria appears to be punishing Templ for his book and attempting to intimidate claimants as well as historians. Background:

Mark Moogalian, author, songwriter, performer and Paris expat English teacher, is also a very brave man. He was shot and seriously wounded on the Thalys high speed train to Paris by suspected Islamic terrorist Ayoub-El Khazzani, who was armed with a Kalashnikov, a pistol, cutters and numerous rounds of ammunition. According to The Telegraph, Moogalian managed to wrestle the Kalashnikov away from El Khazzani who then shot him with his other gun, a pistol. As of this writing, he is still in the ICU of Lille, and seriously ill.
Moogalian, who came to Europe in the 1990s to create music, is originally from Richmond, Virginia.
In the 1990s a French student of Russian wrote a song in Russian. The words, while understandable were quirky and charmingly original. A French group recorded it (in Russian) and it sank into oblivion. Until a few months ago, when, under the direction of a Russian-American animation artist, animators around the world crowdsourced portions of the (absolutely magnificent) clip below.

Yet, despite unprecedented resources, cancer mortality continued to increase.
There were many reasons for this, as Siddhartha Mukherjee documents in his outstanding "biography of cancer, The Emperor of All Maladies. Cancer was difficult to understand. Scientists, surgeons and oncologists worked separately. Double blind evaluations of therapies were not adequately used to determine what worked and what did not. But one reason stands out:
The clear link between smoking and cancer was ignored. Attacking preventable cancer deaths was simply not part of the plan. And the tobacco industry did everything it could to ensure that it would not be part of the plan.
***
IS TYPE 2 DIABETES THE NEW CANCER?
Faced with clear evidence that its products caused cancer, the tobacco industry used its massive financial and media buying power to hide the evidence.
Philip Morris created the Council for Tobacco Research to instill doubt. Big Tobacco financed friendly scientists who would come up with "studies" that "showed" that the evidence was confusing. That no conclusion could be drawn. That "more research was needed.
According to the NYT, Coca Cola has created the Global Energy Balance Network, to "alter" the war on obesity. The purpose: to shift the blame from sugary drinks (sold by Coca Cola) to a lack of exercise.
